If you are looking to go on an adventure
to explore rainforests, seeing mesmerising indigena communities,
this is definitely the programme for you! The expedition
base is situated next to a waterway with a boat dock, and
is surrounded by lush rainforest that is the home to monkeys,
caiman, otters and other wildlife, which (depending on your
luck) can be regularly sighted from the base. Across the
waterway (a short canoe ride away). There is no road access
to the region, so all transportation is via kayak, canoe
and motor boat, through the stunning rivers surrounded by
tropical rainforest and its associated wildlife.
This adventurous expedition gives individuals the opportunity
to work, explore and live in one of the most remote regions
of the peruvian jungle, whilst contributing to vital conservation
projects. The expedition plays a vital role in the development
and management of the long-term wildlife conservation of
the Otishi National Park and Amazon Jungle, and in community
education programmes in the area. The main projects involve:
conservation, animals predation and abundance research,
canal bird monitoring, mammal camera trapping, and aiding
community education programmes.
Naturally a volunteer's Spanish will improve over the course
of their volunteering but it is highly recommended that
the volunteer take advantage of the Spanish lessons offered
by our program staff .
Start
and Duration Placements begin on the 1st and 15th of each month. Volunteers
can choose to volunteer for periods of one week to six
months.
Language Requirements
PFY does not require individuals to possess foreign language skills to be able to participate in the Volunteer Program. It goes with saying that the volunteer experience is greatly enhanced if one is capable of communicating with community members in the host country’s native language. All prospective volunteers travelling to a project site in Peru have the opportunity to enrol in online general and medical Spanish courses with PFY national partner, Peruvian Spanish School.
Orientation
Orientation will begin on the 1st and 15th of each month in Lima or Huancayo (depending on where you wish to be placed). Orientation will be conducted by program staff in Lima and Huancayo and cover everything you need to know for your volunteering placement in Peru – Introduction to Peru, Peruvian Customs, Language Training Information (Spanish), Rules and Expectations, Safety, Travel Opportunities in Peru, Introduction to your project and placement. During orientation volunteers will finalise their placement city and specific placement.
